Our scientists tackle some of the most challenging and urgent issues facing humanity today: economic inequality, climate change, A.I., and refugees.

Discovering how to create symbiotic relationships between a community's natural, human, and organizational ecologies; including the generation of more sustainable product and manufacturing practices.

INCOME INEQUALITY & ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Prior research theorized that ever-increasing economic inequality encouraged entrepreneurship. Research from our lab has turned this thinking on its head. We show extreme levels of economic inequality dampens entrepreneurial activity, especially in high tech sectors.

UNIFIED INSTITUTIONALISM

We introduce a novel framework that unifies the two dominant perspectives in sociological neoinstitutionalism, the institutional logics, and the institutional pillars typologies, and apply this unified framework to examine the existing research at the nexus of entrepreneurship and institutional theory while outlining a set of entrepreneurial phenomena to which the framework can be applied. A feat that acclaimed sociologist Howard Aldrich called, "a real tour de force!"

PATRIARCHAL NORMS & FEMALE-LED ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Our research on gender discrimination highlights how sexism holds back a community's entrepreneurial energy. In one study, we call attention to the rise of femicide and its harmful effects on society. In particular, we show that spikes in the rates of the intentional killing of women cause a X% decline in local economic activity. In another study, we highlight how lower barriers to firm entry can reduce median female income if there is too much gender occupational segregation in the community.
